Music

Walter Afanasieff (known by many as "Walter A.") is a multi-Grammy Award winning record producer and songwriter.

Walter is best known for his collaboration with Mariah Carey for whom he produced and co-wrote for many years, beginning in 1990. During this time, Walter produced and co-wrote “Hero,” the second single from Carey’s album Music Box. Carey and Afanasieff also wrote “One Sweet Day,” a duet between Carey and Boyz II Men, which holds the record for the longest run song run at #1 on the Billboard Hot 100,  at a total of 16 weeks. The song was nominated for Record of the Year and Best Pop Collaboration with Vocals at the 1996 Grammy Awards. It was awarded the ASCAP Song of the Year Award in 1996.

Walter won his first Grammy for Record of the Year at the 1999 Grammy Awards for producing “My Heart Will Go On” by Celine Dion, which became the theme song to the 1997 film Titanic. The song became the world’s best-selling single of 1998. Walter was also awarded the Non-Classical Producer of the Year at the 2000 Grammy Awards.

Walter has written and produced music for many leading artists, including Michael Jackson, Lionel Richie, Luther Vandross, Destiny's Child, Kenny G, Michael Bolton, Savage Garden, Andrea Bocelli, Johnny Mathis, Kenny Loggins, Barbra Streisand, Christina Aguilera, Ricky Martin, Marc Anthony, Mika, Babyface, Josh Groban, Whitney Houston, Tina Arena, Lara Fabian, and Leona Lewis. His most recent projects include producing and arranging Barbra Strisand's latest platinum album Partners, producing and arranging Idina Menzel's Holiday Wishes Christmas album, and producing, arranging and writing Kenny G.'s Brazilian Nights.

Walter has also produced and arranged successful motion picture soundtracks, including Disney's Beauty and the Beast (the Celine Dion/Peabo Bryson title-track duet), Aladdin (“A Whole New World”) and The Hunchback of Notre Dame (“Some Day”). Walter was also the producer and arranger for “Go the Distance,” the Oscar-nominated Michael Bolton song from the animated film Hercules. Walter continues to perform on most of his recordings (mainly keyboards, synthesizers and drum programming) today.

In addition to his music ventures, Walter is involved in multiple business initiatives, from health and well-being to education. This includes co-founding and leading the Department for Composers and Producers of the ISINA Global Music Academy in Los Angeles and supporting Chester Aldridge and the US Equity Holdings team in healthcare projects such as Aelan Cell Technologies and Mount Tam Biotechnologies, which focuses on developing treatments for autoimmune disorders such as lupus. Many of Walter's closest friends and family members, including his sister, have been affected by lupus. Walter has been active in raising public awareness about the disease.

Walter currently splits his time between Los Angeles and Moscow, where he is a judge for Russia's X-Factor.
